The Atomic Kid: An Aesthetic Formed in the Nuclear Landscape is a new publication on the work of James Stanford. As a native of Las Vegas, Stanford has first-hand experience of the nuclear testing that took place 88 miles outside the city limits of Las Vegas. As a boy, growing up in the 50s, the science-fiction of giant mutations from radiation clouds excited his imagination. But as an adult, working as a technical illustrator for the nuclear industry in Nevada, he learned more than he ever wanted to know about the lethal dangers of radiation. This book, and the artworks within its pages, explores the influence that the nuclear landscape has had on the development of Stanford’s aesthetic vision.

[cloud] has been powering the production of The Atomic Kid. Gemma and I have, curated, co-edited, and contributed to the book. Our associates, Jenny Seabrook, was our copy editor, and Zully Mejia will be handling the distribution of the new release. We’re working with the brilliant British art book designer Philip Lewis. The publication includes insightful critical essays by British art historian, critic, and Andy Warhol scholar, Jean Wainwright, and American art historian for the Guggenheim in New York, Rosa JH Berland, along with a foreword by Rob McCoy, CEO of the Atomic Museum. Included in the book is an important historical perspective by Stanford on the influence Las Vegas and its unique nuclear context has had on his development as an artist. The project is associated with the upcoming exhibition, Atomic Odyssey, at the Atomic Museum, a Smithsonian Institute affiliate, in Las Vegas later in the Fall.
