The [c] Word: Dr Rebecca Hearle

On 6 January at 5:30pm UK-time, join us for The [c] Word: Dr Rebecca Hearle and her presentation, Words in pictures, pictures in words. Rebecca will be discussing her deposit series of works, which include letterpress and typewritten texts. The ‘hidden book’ within deposit #1 uses an overprinted letterpress text to describe but also to partially obscure the memories she is recounting. The second ‘page’ of deposit #2, a text which asks, ‘What are you not saying Roni Horn?’ is overprinted with a Malevich-like black square, referencing the Malevich painting recreated as a linocut later in the artwork. She says, ‘deposit also gives in to my own desire to obscure—a desire I suspect I share with the artist Roni Horn who herself uses texts and words as part of her creative practice.’

I am interested in capturing the subtle dialogue between the landscape and myself in my work. Being influenced by contemporary and classic landscape writers and having a life-long passion for books, including working in bookshops and libraries since 2000, has resulted in my including both original and found text in my work and developing some pieces into book or narrative holding structures.

Rebecca is primarily a printmaker and her recent interest in letterpress combines her print and narrative interests; it also calls back to undergraduate typography lessons. As well as print, Rebecca has responded to landscape in a variety of other ways including photography, site-specific installations, sewing and binding—making garments and books, and storytelling, or a ‘thick’ writing of place. She has also included ritual walking practices, and the deposition of objects or offerings to situate the landscape as warranting tribute. Tickets are on sale now for £15.

Spill the ‘T’ — How to Break into a Museum with Jim Butler

On 13 January 2026 at 5:30pm UK-time, join us for Spill the ‘T’ — How to Break into a Museum with Jim Butler. As a printmaker and book artist, Jim will talk about his work and why it has been acquired by leading public collections in the UK, Europe and the USA. He will look at how and where to find the right curators and at building ongoing relationships with them. The talk will cover researching institutions’ acquisitions policies and how to use them to position specific works. It will also address the frustrations of dealing with institutional budgets, bureaucracy and rejection.

Jim was born in Dublin and now lives in Cambridge. He lectures at Cambridge School of Art, Anglia Ruskin University. 
His practice is centred around printmaking, hand-printed artist’s books, collage and drawing. His work has been exhibited widely in galleries in the UK, Europe, Mexico and the USA. His artist’s books are held in numerous leading public collections worldwide including The Tate, The British Library, The Fitzwilliam Museum, The National Gallery of Ireland, Meermano Museum and the Yale Center for British Art. His screenprinted book Blackrock Sequence won the 2018 AOI World Illustration Award for best professional book and is currently on display in the Treasures Gallery of the British Library (opposite the Magna Carta).
