Spill the ‘T’ is a new strand of professional development talks presented by recognised arts professionals for [c]CC Art School. Join us on Tuesday, 14 Oct 2025 at 5:30pm UK-time for ‘Creating Bakashimika International Photography Festival’!

For our first Spill the ‘T’ talk, Dr Kerstin Hacker, Senior Academic in Photography at Cambridge School of Art, Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, UK, offers a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the Bakashimika International Photography Festival, which she co-founded with Patrick Chilaisha, Edith Chiliboy and Geoffrey Phiri in 2025 in Lusaka, Zambia. Bakashimika is the first photographic festival in Zambia and the only one in Southern Africa. In its inaugural iteration it brought together forty Southern African artists in twenty exhibitions.
Drawing on her long-standing research into visual self-governance and her sensitive practice of privilege cognisant mentorship, Kerstin will chart the journey from underpinning research and initial concept to international impact, highlighting the strategic steps taken to develop a new photographic platform.

This session will chronologically map the challenges and breakthroughs of launching Bakashimika International Photography Festival, and how critical creative practice research can drive international dialogue and cultural collaborations. It will highlight the importance of passion, commitment and hard work when starting a new venture.
This is a unique opportunity to learn how to organise a photographic or other visual arts festival, and we encourage you to explore the festival website Bakashimika.com before the talk.
