ยฉ2025 Karen Abadie

In this talk Dr Karen Abadie will introduce a new area of enquiry that stems from an ever-evolving relationship with materiality. From a deep respect for the agency of the more-than-human within her art practice, and an insatiable need to get her hands dirty, Karen has an intimate and dynamic engagement with materials that change state, that create a sense of their own magic.

Through her analogue film practice and ceramic experimentation, she unpicks those moments of material change, where she holds her breath, as the revelation is revealed. Where the alchemy happens. Where the material state has changed, the image is revealed, the mud has turned to glass.

Karen is lecturer in Fine Art at University of Plymouth. As a multidisciplinary artist, Her practice specialism is sound, video, and analogue film installation, live art and socially engaged art practice. In both her teaching and in her art practice her focus is on the body as site which informs her engagement in mental health artistic strategies. Join us on Tuesday, 2 September 2025 at 5:30pm UK-time for this fascinating discussion.
