Virga Gallery is an online gallery, and Virga launches today on the Ides of March because in the ancient Roman calendar the Ides of March was associated with the first moon of the new year and the celebration of the Festival of Anna Perenna.

Virgagallery.net is an online gallery and exhibition space dedicated to the promotion of represented artists, Linda Alterwitz, Marion Piper, and Juan Sebastian. In addition to the promotion and exhibition of their work, Virga will occasionally work with artists outside of the gallery who are deserving of exposure.
Represented artists are mid-career artists who have worked independently to build their careers. Virga aims to highlight their achievements, expose the developments they have made in their respective practices, and support their efforts to move their careers forward. Virga champions the work of these artists because they bring unique insights to their disciplines and to the wider discourse of contemporary art.
Virga launches today on the Ides of March because in the ancient Roman calendar the Ides of March was associated with the first moon of the new year. And to mark the occasion, the Romans celebrated the Feast of Anna Perenna. Ordinary Romans would picnic to celebrate the festival and the new year. They gave offerings to Anna Perenna for blessings of a happy year to come. Ovid tells the legend of Anna who was escaping threats on her life. She was turned into a water nymph by the river god, Numicus, and was hidden in the ‘perennial stream’ where she was renamed Anna Perenna.
